2012 Focus - Best Greens in Wmbg

  •  Rationale
    •  Courses are in much better condition now, in general
    •  With courses in good condition, greens are arguably the most important determinant of course evaluation. Good greens; good course. Bad greens; bad course
    •  Prior to May, FC greens were a source of major dissatisfaction from members and had poor reputation in Wmbg due to being soft, slow and bumpy
    •  Improved greens should be a source of increased revenue
    •  Will build on new Affiniti maintenance schedule. Bruce to get Steve S up to speed.
    •  Do the best with what we’ve got
    •  “Adopt a hole”
    •  Sponsored divot repair tools. Dan to pursue.
    •  Need qualitative (e.g. smooth, true roll, firm) and quantitative (e.g. Stimpmeter) objectives for Greens

Need 2012 objectives for overall course conditions.
·         Steve to develop for Bruce.

Pampas Grasses on Blackheath #1 and Marsh Hawk #11
·         Balls roll into and slow play.
·         Steve to check out and decide what, if anything to be done.

Cart Path Ruts
·         Multiple causes (golf carts, maintenance carts, heavy machinery, security)
·         Steve to check out and determine what needs to be done.

Blue Heron Black Tee Distances
·         Dan to get yardages and put on scorecards
·         What about Combo Tee distances?

WINTER TEES REPORT TO CCMA BOD

BACKGROUND

In winter (for this purpose, defined as December 1 to February 28/29), the lower temperatures can cause the normal playing difficulty of our courses to change materially. This occurs because the lower temperatures result in significantly less ball carry and/or the courses take significantly longer to dry out after rain/snow, resulting in low/no roll.

To restore normal playing difficulty, some CCMA members proposed that the longer holes on each course be shortened by moving the tees up, e.g. Gold to Silver.

A Group was formed consisting of the HRT Committee Chair (Al Davis), MGA VP Handicaps (Ken Ruszkowski), Director of Golf (Dan Elliott) and Greens Committee Chair (Barry Golliday) to evaluate the proposals. In addition, Dan contacted the VSGA.

GROUP OBJECTIVES & FINDINGS

The Group’s objectives were to:

  1. Stay within the USGA Handicapping System rules
  2. Maintain the courses’ playing difficulty under normal ( March 1 - December  1) playing conditions and while avoiding the cost of a change in course rating/slope
  3. Maintain acceptable wear and tear on the tee boxes

The following rules from “USGA Handicapping System 2008-2011” apply:

  •  Section 7 Preferred Lies (Winter Rules): 7-3. Maintaining Normal Scoring Difficulty
  •  Section 14 Installing Course Ratings In A Region: 14-5-a Modification f Courses, Temporary Changes
  •  Section 15 Course Set Up: 15-1 Keeping Course Difficulty Constant and 15-2 Balancing Placement of Tees

The rules (7-3, 15-1 & 15-2) recognize two relevant “Abnormal Conditions” and allow adjustment of tee markers for weather and turf conditions to maintain the course’s playing difficulty under normal conditions:

  1.   “Soft & Slow”
  2. “Extreme” Slow

Under “Soft & Slow” conditions, half of the tee markers are placed in the front of the Front Half of the teeing ground and half of the tee markers are placed in the front of the Back Half of the tee ground.

Under “Extreme” Slow conditions, all tee markers are placed in the Front Half of all tees.

These adjustments are allowed within the “usual” (e.g. Gold) teeing ground. If some of the Gold tees were moved forward to the Silver teeing ground, the rules (14-5-a) require notification of the VSGA to determine whether scores are to be accepted for handicap purposes and whether ratings/slopes should be modified temporarily.

These adjustments should be applied to all teeing grounds - Black, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

GROUP RECOMMENDATIONS

Adjust the tees per the USGA rules.

The Director of Golf (Dan Elliott) and the Golf Course Superintendent (Steve Schmidt) will have day-to-day authority to determine if, and which, abnormal conditions exist and the appropriate placement of the tee markers.

  • Exact placement will be consistent with the three objectives stated above
  • Forward teeing grounds will be used for those holes that have them (e.g. Marsh Hawk #7)
  • Cart path only will be a criteria for Extreme Conditions

The Green and HRT Committees will monitor and periodically review the effectiveness and implementation of these recommendations.

COMMENTS

No CCMA member or individual player has the authority to change the location of the tee markers. It creates a different course for the players who play after the change versus those who played the holes as originally set up.
